The Chennai Bengaluru corridor

The southern region it covers already has a strong industrial and technology base, so the corridor is partly about strengthening and organising existing industrial geography rather than building entirely from open land. How it is structured

Like the other corridors, the CBIC follows a corridor-and-node model, with planned industrial nodes positioned along its connectivity spine to draw on transport links. India's corridors are coordinated nationally, historically through the agency that became NICDC (the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, the central agency behind the corridor), with delivery at the node level through state-linked bodies. Contrast with Dholera

Comparing the CBIC with Dholera highlights two different situations. The CBIC threads through a region that is already industrialised and urbanised, so much of its work is about improving connectivity and adding nodes within an established economic landscape. Dholera, by contrast, is a greenfield city built from largely open coastal land in Gujarat, where the challenge is creating a city and its infrastructure from scratch. So the CBIC leans toward organising and connecting existing strengths, while Dholera is an attempt to manufacture a new industrial city where little existed. As with the other corridors, it is also a scale difference: the CBIC is a corridor of many nodes, whereas Dholera is a single, very large node on the Delhi Mumbai corridor.

Why the comparison is useful

Placing Dholera against a southern corridor like the CBIC underlines that India is pursuing industrial growth through both routes: strengthening established industrial regions and building new greenfield cities. Neither approach is inherently better; they suit different geographies. For understanding Dholera specifically, the CBIC comparison shows why Dholera carries both the promise and the risk of a from-scratch build. It can be planned coherently, but it must generate its own industry, jobs and population over decades, whereas a corridor through an existing industrial belt can lean on activity that already exists. A note on the southern industrial base

The CBIC is instructive because it works with one of India's strongest existing industrial and technology bases, spanning established manufacturing and a deep pool of engineering talent between Chennai and Bengaluru. That means much of the corridor's task is to improve connectivity, add serviced nodes and remove bottlenecks within an economy that already exists, which can yield results relatively quickly. Dholera has no such established base around it; it must attract industry and build an ecosystem from a low starting point on the Gujarat coast. This is why Dholera leans so heavily on marquee anchors such as the semiconductor fab to seed activity. The comparison highlights a genuine trade-off: the CBIC builds on proven strength but has less freedom to plan from scratch, while Dholera has a clean planning slate but must manufacture its own economic gravity. Each faces a different, real difficulty, and Dholera's is the harder starting position.
