Industrial corridors of India
India is developing several industrial corridors under the central agency NICDC, each pairing a transport backbone with planned industrial nodes. The best known is the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, but others include the Amritsar Kolkata, Chennai Bengaluru and Vizag Chennai corridors. The idea behind industrial corridors
An industrial corridor is a planned band of development built along a major transport route, usually a dedicated freight railway or a high-capacity road, with industrial cities and investment regions positioned as nodes along it. The strategy is to concentrate manufacturing and logistics where transport is strongest, rather than allowing industry to grow in an unplanned and poorly connected way. Each corridor combines the transport spine with serviced industrial land, trunk infrastructure and, in the larger nodes, full city plans. India has adopted this model across several corridors, coordinated nationally so that they share a common approach to planning, funding and delivery. Dholera is one node within this national programme, which is why it is designed as an industrial city rather than a general township.
The main corridors
The most developed of India's corridors is the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, or DMIC, anchored on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, of which Dholera is the Gujarat node. Other corridors in the national programme include the Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor, which follows the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor across northern and eastern states, the Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor in the south, and the Vizag Chennai Industrial Corridor, which forms part of the East Coast Economic Corridor and has had Asian Development Bank support. These are well-established parts of India's corridor strategy. How they are coordinated
India's industrial corridors are coordinated by the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, or NICDC, which was formerly the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, DMICDC, before its remit expanded to cover multiple corridors. NICDC handles the planning, funding structures and progress monitoring for the corridors and their nodes. At the node level, delivery runs through state-linked bodies; in Dholera that means DSIRDA (the Dholera Special Investment Region Development Authority, the body that plans the area and approves land use) as the planning authority and DICDL (Dholera Industrial City Development Limited, the company that builds the city) as the building SPV, jointly owned by the Gujarat and central governments. This two-level structure, a national coordinator plus local delivery vehicles, is common across the corridors and is how a national strategy becomes specific cities on the ground.
