The central spine is the main road backbone that organises Dholera's layout, carrying traffic and services through the city and reserving a corridor for future rapid transit. What a central spine road is

In a planned city, a spine road is the primary axis that the rest of the layout is built around. It carries the heaviest movement, hosts the main utility runs, and gives the city a clear structure so that zones, blocks and secondary streets connect to it in an orderly way. Rather than growing outward from an old core like a historic town, a greenfield city such as Dholera can set its spine first and design everything else in relation to it. The spine is therefore both a piece of transport infrastructure and an organising idea. It determines how the industrial, residential, City Centre and other zones relate to one another, and it fixes the alignments for water, power, drainage and data that run alongside the road.

The spine within Dholera's road network

Dholera's road building has so far concentrated in the Activation Area, where a reported network of about 72 km of internal roads has been built at widths ranging from 18 to 70 m. The widest of these carry the spine function, with room for multiple lanes, service margins, pedestrian and cycle lanes, and a reserved corridor for a future rapid-transit system. Reserving that transit corridor now, before development crowds the alignment, is a deliberate greenfield advantage, because retrofitting mass transit into a built-up city is far harder. The spine also connects the city to its external links, including the Ahmedabad to Dholera expressway, the roughly 109 km NH-751 route reported opened on 31 March 2026, which ties the internal grid to the regional network.

Why the spine matters to the layout

Because the spine fixes the city's structure, proximity to it is a common reference point when describing where things sit in Dholera, alongside proximity to the Activation Area, the airport and the expressway. It is important to be clear that this site treats such proximity purely as a planning and orientation fact, not as an investment signal, and it does not sell plots or advise on purchases. What the spine genuinely indicates is where trunk services and access are concentrated, which is why the earliest development clusters near it. As later Town Planning schemes are built, the spine network is intended to extend across the wider region, giving the full city the same backbone logic demonstrated in the core.

The honest state of the network

As with the rest of Dholera's infrastructure, the road spine is real in the developed zone and planned beyond it. The 72 km built in the Activation Area is a genuine, serviced network, while extending the spine and its transit corridor across the roughly 422 sq km of planned urban land is a phased effort tied to funding and construction over years. A reader should therefore picture a completed backbone in the core and a designed but largely unbuilt network in the later phases. The reserved rapid-transit corridor is a plan, not an operating service, and any transit timeline should be treated as a target. This is an independent description of civic road infrastructure.

Compared with organic city growth

The spine approach contrasts sharply with how most cities historically grew. An older city typically expanded outward from a small core, with roads following existing paths and property lines, which is why established cities often have congested, irregular street networks that are hard to widen or add transit to. A greenfield city like Dholera can instead set a generous primary axis first and design everything in relation to it, reserving space for future needs such as a rapid-transit corridor before development crowds the alignment. This is a real advantage of building from open land. The trade-off is that a designed spine only proves its worth once the city fills and traffic and transit actually use it. Until then it is capacity built ahead of demand, which is efficient in the long run but can look oversized in the early years, a normal feature of the greenfield method.
