Lam Research, based in Fremont, California, is a leading supplier of wafer-fabrication equipment, best known for its strength in etch and deposition. It is one of the handful of companies, alongside Applied Materials and Tokyo Electron, that supply the bulk of the process tools in modern fabs. Lam's systems are used to carve extremely precise three-dimensional structures into films and to deposit the thin layers that make up a chip, and the company is particularly associated with advanced etch, where control at the atomic scale matters. Like other big equipment makers, Lam earns a large share of its revenue from ongoing service, upgrades and spare parts, because fab tools run continuously and need constant support to sustain yield.
What Lam Research equipment does
Lam concentrates on two of the most repeated steps in chipmaking: etch and deposition. Etch removes material selectively to turn a patterned photoresist mask into real physical structures, from shallow trenches to deep, high-aspect-ratio features. As chips have grown more three-dimensional, precise etch control has become one of the hardest problems in manufacturing, and Lam's plasma etch systems are built for exactly this. On the deposition side, Lam supplies tools that grow conformal films inside tiny features, including atomic layer deposition, which lays down material essentially one atomic layer at a time. The company also makes cleaning and surface-preparation systems. Together these steps are performed many times across a process flow, so etch and deposition capacity is central to a fab's throughput and quality.
Where this fits a mature-node fab
Mature and specialty nodes still depend on many cycles of etch and deposition, so a plant of Dholera's type would use tools in Lam's categories. In a technology-transfer arrangement the process partner's qualified equipment list typically drives which specific systems are installed, so the choice follows the transferred recipe rather than being open. A fab of this kind plausibly uses etch and deposition tools of this sort, but the actual vendor mix at Dholera is a commercial matter tied to the PSMC process and is not disclosed in our sources.
Etch and deposition in the 3D era
Lam Research's prominence has grown as chips have become more three-dimensional. Structures such as the fins in modern transistors and the tall stacks in 3D memory demand etch and deposition that can build and carve features with atomic-scale control and very high aspect ratios, which is Lam's specialty. Mature and specialty nodes of the kind planned at Dholera use more conventional patterning than leading-edge logic, so the most extreme 3D etch is less central there, but many cycles of etch and deposition are still required for any chip. This is why Lam-class tools appear across fabs at every node. As with the other equipment majors, our sources record no Lam Research order or role specific to the Dholera fab, so the company remains ecosystem context rather than a confirmed participant.
Dholera status: not confirmed in our sources
Our sources, the Dholera fact pack (v14), the V13 refresh and the FAQ bank, confirm only two fab supplier relationships for Dholera: PSMC as the Tata fab's process-technology partner and ASML as its lithography partner. They do not name this company as a confirmed Dholera supplier. A 300mm fab of the type Tata is building would normally rely on tools or materials of this kind, so the company is sensible ecosystem context, but a routine industry fit is not evidence of a contract.
